You can use the crop tool to rotate it sideways, then export it as an image to your desktop and rotate it vertical again with QuickTimePlayer. If you are working with a still image you don't need to create a new project. However, if you import it back into iMovie, it will have the black bars when displayed in the preview screen. The clip will now be vertical without black bars. Do an Edit/Rotate to make it right side up, and save. After the app is open, you’ll see a screen with a number of options. The first step is to open the iMovie app on your iPhone. The following steps will help you get started: Step 1: Open the iMovie App. Then export the the project in its sideways rotation to your desktop. Making iMovie vertical on your iPhone is actually very simple. Since you’re working on a bigger screen, it might be even easier. Then use the rotation rectangles to the right of the crop icon selection box to rotate the clip sideways. The process of changing a video’s aspect ratio in iMovie on your iPad is similar to how you’d do it on your iPhone. If you want to export a 9:16 video clip without the black bars in the exported product, you can place it into a newly created project, select it in the time line and click on the crop icon (the one that looks like intersecting angles) in the tool bar at the upper right of your screen. Use the camera controls to set options such as flash and resolution, then tap the Record button. On iPhone, tap the plus button, then tap the Camera button. You can display a 9:16 clip, but there will be black bars on each side to make it fit the 16:9 screen. With your project open in iMovie, scroll through the timeline so the playhead (the white vertical line) appears where you want to add the video or photo. The 16:9 screen dimensions of iMovie cannot be changed.
